Research work on this area gathers analytic, numerical and computational aspects, and often its integration, to achieve efficient numerical algorithms. The work included computational fluid dynamics, inverse problems, numerical methods for differential and integral equations, and computational geometry.

Coordinator: Adélia Sequeira

Development of appropriate mathematical and numerical models for large-scale computational simulations of the human cardiovascular system. Emphasis is given to the setup of physiologically accurate models associated with some vascular diseases built on virtual realistic geometries reconstructed from in vivo medical images, and to the use of highly integrated and efficient numerical algorithms for their simulation at acceptable computational costs.

Coordinator: António Pacheco

Research focused on several areas of applied statistics and stochastic processes. It will be carried out in close connection with engineers and economists, and strong emphasis will be put on producing codes implementing the methods resulting from the research in widely used software packages like the R statistical package.
